What is Self Defence?

Is your goal to teach violent individuals a lesson? Or is your goal to get home safely?

In self-defense, fighting is an absolute last resort. Real fights are unpredictable. You might think the odds are in your favor, then more attackers appear. Weapons get drawn.

Cell phone cameras get drawn, too. Our society has rules about what constitutes self-defense.

“I didn’t want to fight. I was trying to get away!” doesn’t hold up well in court if there is video of you taking an action-movie fighting stance before causing permanent damage.

Our Story

The Cairns Toshindo School was founded by 4th Degree Black Belt, Ron Day, back in 2001. Ron Day began his martial arts journey in multiple martial systems since the age of 6. Amoung these systems include, Karate, Taekwondo, Kendo, and Muay Thai, to which he earn black belts in each system and won many kickboxing tournements. Eventually his life took a turn after discovering An-shu Stephen K. Hayes, the first Westerner and Black Belt Hall of Fame recipient to be trained in Ninjutsu under the tutelage the 34th Grand Master of the Ninjutsu, Masaki Hatsumi.

Travelling around Australia, Japan and the United States, Ron Day honed his martial skills in ninjutsu, and later became the first Australian to earn a Toshin-Do black belt under Stephen K. Hayes. In 2016, Ron Day travelled to the United States again and earnt his 4th degree black belt. He has been running the Cairns Quest Center for over 20 years and has been training in Ninjutsu for over 30 years. In 2023, Mr. Day entered into a business partnership with long time student and 3rd degree instructor, Matthew McCracken and reopened the Cairns Quest Center to the public.

Our school offers a dynamic range of martial arts. We train self defense and survival martial art of Toshin-Do Ninjutsu, and the combative sports martial arts of Kickboxing and MMA. Our goal is to create a community of good spirited, successful, capable and enlightened people to bring joy and safety into the lives of everyone.
